Fractional Chief AI Officer Services

What a fractional chief AI officer costs, compared with a full-time hire

None of the providers we reviewed publishes a fee for the leadership role. These are the best sourced benchmarks available, a worked comparison with a full-time hire and the costs that sit outside the retainer.

A finance director at her desk compares two printed proposals side by side with a pen and a calculator, with a car park visible through the window.
The retainer is rarely the largest line in a year of AI work.

Buyers asking what a fractional chief AI officer costs usually get a call instead of a number. Of the seven providers in our main guide, none publishes the fee for the leadership role. The figures below come from recruiters, an executive search posting and official pay statistics. They are benchmarks, not quotes.

Both recruiters earn fees from placing executives, and KORE1 discloses this on its page. Their figures are useful for the order of magnitude, not as a market average.

A worked comparison

The two providers that publish a time commitment make it possible to turn the hourly benchmark into a monthly figure. The calculation below is ours, using eight-hour days and the typical $250 to $400 range from the Axial Search posting2.

Time commitmentHours a monthIllustrative monthly costIllustrative yearly cost
Two days a month, the low end of SoftTeco's range516$4,000 to $6,400$48,000 to $76,800
Five days a month, the high end of SoftTeco's range540$10,000 to $16,000$120,000 to $192,000
About two days a week, Kuware's embedded format6About 69About $17,300 to $27,700About $208,000 to $333,000

Against a full-time mid-market package of $500,000 to $900,000 in the first year1, a fractional leader at two to five days a month costs a fraction as much. At two days a week, the gap narrows sharply, and the case for a fractional arrangement rests on flexibility and speed rather than price.

What moves the price

  • Days in the room. The single largest factor. SoftTeco's two to five days a month and Kuware's two days a week describe very different roles56.
  • Delivery included or not. A leader who only advises costs less than one who comes with engineers. SoftTeco can add its own engineers for priority initiatives; TechCXO brings in specialists from its bench as needed57.
  • Regulation. Governance work in banking, insurance or life sciences takes more senior time. Kuware and Sikich both name regulated sectors as core clients68.
  • Seniority and track record. Axial Search's posting asks for 15 or more years of experience, five of them at executive level, which is what puts the upper end of the hourly range above $5002.

The costs outside the retainer

The leadership fee is often the smaller part of the first year. A fractional leader decides what to build; someone then has to build and run it. Those costs include engineering time, software licences, hosting and model usage.

A few providers publish these. OpenLazarus, whose yearly AI-Architect engagement is priced per engagement, publishes the costs of the platform its architects build: managed hosting from $150 a month, developer support from $4,500 a month for 10 engineering credits, and 5.5% on AI credits for model usage9. Whichever route a company takes, it helps to ask every provider for the full first-year budget, not only the leadership fee.

How to budget the first year

A budget that limits risk

  • A fixed fee or a hard cap for the first 90 days, with the outputs due at day 30, 60 and 90 written into the agreement.
  • A separate, smaller budget for the first one or two initiatives, so the plan can be tested before the year is committed.
  • A review at day 90 that decides whether to continue, change the time commitment or end the engagement.
  • A line for training staff, which European companies need under Article 4 of the EU AI Act10.
  • A decision point, usually late in the year, on whether a full-time hire or an internal leader should take over.

KORE1 frames the trade-off simply, setting a fractional engagement of about $15,000 a month against a fully loaded full-time hire it puts at $1.5 million1. That second figure reflects large-company packages. For most mid-sized companies, the useful question is narrower: how many days a month of senior judgment the AI agenda needs this year, and who will do the building.

The first 90 days guide describes what those first months should produce.

Questions buyers ask

What is the hourly rate for a fractional chief AI officer?

An Axial Search posting for fractional CAIO work in the US lists $140 to $550 an hour and says candidates typically charge $250 to $400. Providers that sell the role as a service usually price it as a monthly retainer or a flat fee instead.

How much is a fractional CAIO a month?

KORE1, a recruiter, puts a fractional head of AI at $4,000 to $20,000 a month for 16 to 32 hours. None of the seven providers in our main guide publishes its own monthly fee.

Is a fractional chief AI officer cheaper than a full-time one?

For most mid-sized companies, by a wide margin. KORE1 estimates the first-year value of a full-time mid-market CAIO package at $500,000 to $900,000, against $48,000 to $240,000 a year for a fractional retainer at its published monthly range. The comparison changes once a company needs the leader most days of the week.
